Advisory & Design

Kaern Consulting.

The method, applied to your room. We work with institutions building their own schools, campuses, clinics and retreats — lending the dual thesis without taking the project over.

What we offer

Four ways the method can enter your project.

Not every commission needs Kaern to design the whole building. Sometimes the method belongs in the margins — at the brief, at the review, at the post-occupancy report. We meet projects where they are.

01 · Brief

The Sentence workshop

Two to four weeks. We sit with your team and write the single sentence that describes how the building should make a person feel. Your architects keep the commission; we hand back the brief that the rest of the work measures itself against.

02 · Review

Dual-thesis design review

We read your drawings through the two lenses — the body inside the room, the planet around it — and return a written report. Each room, each elevation, each material, scored against both. Honest, slow, and specific.

03 · Source

Material sourcing & vernacular

We walk the radius for you. Quarries, mills, clay pits, timber yards within 200 km of the site — traced, assessed, photographed. You receive a register of materials whose origins someone has stood inside.

04 · Steward

Post-occupancy measurement

For buildings already occupied. We measure cortisol, daylight autonomy, acoustic load and water cycle, then write the report that makes the building's lessons available to its next sibling. We do this for our own work — we are happy to do it for yours.

Who we work with

The room may not be ours, but the method can be.

Schools & Universities

For independent boards

Already commissioning an architect, but want the brief, the materials and the post-occupancy work done from the dual-thesis lens. We sit between your governors and your studio.

Hospitals & Clinics

For health systems

Refurbishing an existing facility, or laying the brief for a new wing. Kaern Health builds the most ambitious version of the thesis; Consulting brings it to the buildings that are already in use.

Studios & Foundations

For other practices

Architecture studios who want a dual-thesis review on a sensitive commission. We sign NDAs, we keep our name off the drawings. The method is yours to claim.

What Consulting is — and isn't

We bring the method. You keep the project.

Consulting is not a back-door commission. We are not auditioning to design your building. We arrive with the method, do the slice of work you've asked us to do, and leave with the project belonging unambiguously to you and your architect.

That clarity matters. The dual thesis is most useful when it can be embedded inside other people's work — when a thousand schools, campuses, and clinics that Kaern will never design quietly carry the method anyway. Consulting is how we get there.

"The most useful methods are the ones their authors are willing to lend out."

The Method, at a glance

Six stages we walk every commission through.

Whether Kaern designs the room or consults on it, the work flows through the same six stages. The full narrative is on the Method page — this is the shape.

01

Listen

Before drawings, the sit. With the client, the land, the wind. A long, slow brief.

02

Brief

One sentence about feeling. The brief is what every later decision measures itself against.

03

Source

Materials whose origin we have stood inside. Within a 200 km radius of the site, by default.

04

Design

Drawn from the held core out. Read through three lenses: person, lifecycle, land.

05

Build

By hand, on site, in time. Slowness is the point. Materials cure in place.

06

Steward

Seasonal returns for five years. The post-occupancy report becomes the next brief.

Engagements / yr

0

The number we take. Less than we are asked for; more than the studio's own work allows for comfortably.

Typical duration

0wks

From first call to written deliverable. The brief workshop runs longer; the review, shorter.

Returning clients

Most consulting commissions become long arcs — second buildings, third reviews. We like it that way.
